The Dido's crest is described in Heraldic terms as "issuant from the base of flames proper"
and is derived from Virgil's story of Dido, founder and Queen of Carthage,
who destroyed herself on a funeral pyre when she was forsaken by her true love, Aeneas.

HMS Dido F-104 first commissioned in 1963 and served until being sold in 1983 to New Zealand and renamed to HMNZS Southland
