"A brief but unforgettable encounter"
Whilst serving in the electrical branch aboard HMS DIDO

We were in Alexandria and had suffered damage from a near miss returning from a Malta convoy. I was fault finding in the bowels below X turret on a Newton circuit breaker when I heard a cultured voice above asking my progress. I had not slept for 20 hours and I was paddling in oil and dirty water so my reply was unrepeatable. A few minutes later I was joined by an immaculately clad overalled person who had volunteered to hold my AVOmeter. I was surprised at the electrical knowledge of this person.

My helper was
Lord Louis Mountbatten
Capt (D) H.M.S. Kelly
who was renowned for his wandering around ships unannounced
